About The Molan Gold standard.

The Molan Gold Standard™ (MGS) is a grading system that has been reviewed by the Ministry for Primary Industries of New Zealand to ensure that it meets legislative requirements. It appraises the natural marker methylglyoxal found in Manuka Honey, and assures purity and quality.

The Molan Gold Standard™ is tested and certified by an accredited New Zealand laboratory under the ISO17025 standard and a lab certificate for any batch of Molan Gold Standard certified honey is available on request.

MGS also certifies that scientific standards have been met to ensure the highest quality is maintained in all aspects.

The Molan Gold Standard is:

  • A Quality Trademark.

  • Backed by the scientific research of Dr Peter Molan.

  • Internationally recognized.

Independent facility audits

MGS adheres to a Code of Practice set out by New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries, which is audited by Assure Quality to ensure compliance with quality standard production facility requirements.

Each stage of the production is audited on a regular basis including; harvesting, extraction testing and packing facilities. Strict protocols are set in place by New Zealand law.

Branding and promotional guidelines and claims

The MGS rating system is available for all honey producers, providing their honey meets the protocols laid down in the rating correlation. All labels of our honey are approved by Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to ensure that they comply with each countries legislation. We ensure no unsupported and therapeutic claims are made on labels and promotional material.

Independent product traceability

Every jar of MGS Manuka Honey displays a batch number. This can be traced back to the individual hive sites in New Zealand where that honey came from. We ensure that each and every batch of honey is harvested from remote mono floral regions of New Zealand, ensuring the purity of the honey. The highest grades are achieved by ensuring other floral sources are not mixed in with the Manuka nectar.

Internationally recognised testing

All MGS Manuka Honey is tested and certified by an accredited New Zealand laboratory under the ISO17025 standard and a lab certificate for any batch of MGS certified honey is available.
Each batch of MGS honey is tested for Methylglyoxal, HMF and DHA, Tutin and APC. All our honey testing for these components is performed at an accredited laboratory. Click here to learn more about these tests.
